Key Achievements:
2007 – Completed undergraduate percussion course at the ANU School of Music (recital)
2007 – Performed on computer along with Gary France on percussion for Contextures with Blue Poles, a piece inspired by and performed with the famous artwork at the National Gallery of Australia.
2008 – Completed Bachelor of Science with Honours (First Class) at the ANU in mathematics and computer science. Honours project is in foundations of mathematics for computer representations of mathematical proofs. (link)
2008 – Founded cross-artform group The Last Man to Die along with visual artist Ben Forster and actor Hanna Cormick.
2008 – Created and performed Cognition and Duet for Vibraphone and Computer with The Hunting Season 2008.
2009 – Master of Music midcourse recital featuring Cognition as well as pieces for marimba and multi-percussion with computer. (link)

Charles Martin is a percussionist, computer musician and interaction designer living in Canberra. His music is the combination of his interests in science, computing, percussion and contemporary music. In his undergraduate degree at the Australian National University he studied classical percussion, mathematics and computer science. In 2007 he completed third year in percussion and in 2008 he graduated with first class honours in mathematics with a focus in logic and computer based proof.
Charles completed a master’s degree in music performance at the ANU in July 2009. His focus was the interaction between percussion and computer music technology. Charles is currently working as a freelance percussionist and teacher. He is conducting research into percussion and computer music through his collaborations with The Last Man to Die, Hands On Stage ^2, and the ensemble Uncut Percussion.
Charles’ research interests include augmented instruments, new interfaces for performance and cross-artform performance.
